Nutcracker / Cascanueces y Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe

Last weekend was Nataly’s big show. She was in an aerial version of the Nutcracker – or Cascanueces en español. It was an incredible experience for her and a wonderful success. She was an angel, a mouse, a middle eastern dancer, and a girl at the party.

Maybe I’m biased, but I thought it was the best and most interesting version of the Nutcracker I’ve seen. The director, Ana Cecilia, has wonderful artistic vision.  It was also an incredible amount of work that left half the cast, including Nataly, sick this week.

Yesterday was the day dedicated to the Virgen de Guadelupe. It’s the anniversary of her miraculous appearance to Juan Diego. She is the protector of the Mexican people, and her image is everywhere. I was expecting more public spectacle, in keeping with San Miguel’s huge parties, but this day is, I guess, more of a going to church and being devout day. Of course, the day had to begin with fireworks at dawn! In every church and shrine the images of the Virgin were topped with a golden 3-dimensional crown and surrounded by blue, green, and red flowers (the colors of Mexico).  My favorite site of the day was the line of taxis all individually decorated in her honor.

This is the little Virgen painted on a wall in an alley on our walk to school.

I learned that you can bring your own personal image of the Virgen to the services to have it specially blessed on this day.
